Students Caught Off Guard After Sudden Shutdown Of Star Career Academy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In our area, Star Career Academy operated in both Philadelphia and Egg Harbor. More than 1,000 students were enrolled at their campus in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

Up until Monday, everything was operating normally, but on Tuesday, the doors were locked and the school had shut down. Many of the students are now asking, what's next.

Sharon Derrick was working toward her goal of becoming a medical assistant at a hospital. She was close to graduating when she got the news which changed everything.

"We wasted all this time. I was pregnant for most of the time. I have a newborn at him," Derrick said. "I thought I was going to start a career for him."

Now those plans are on hold after Sharon and other students learned that their for-profit school was shutting down. Star Career Academy has shut down after 37 years.

In a statement, a spokesperson said:

"Star Career Acamdemy's closing is the result of the negative financial impact of a continued declining student population while operating in the challenging for-profit post-secondary school industry."

Quite simply, the school ran out of money.

Students received the notice through an automated text message and now must figure out what to do about the time spent, the money gone and the credits which may not be transferable. "I had 10 days left to complete the program all together," one student said.

A representative from the academy said students can request transcripts from the school's website, but those credits do not have to be accepted by other institutions.
