Carson Wentz Reflects On First Nine NFL Games

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's easy to forget Carson Wentz is a 23-year-old rookie.

Through nine NFL games, Wentz has led the Eagles to a 5-4 record throwing for 2,121 yards, nine touchdowns, and just five interceptions while completing 65.0-percent of his passes.

But more impressive than the quantifiable statistics are the mature characteristics Wentz possess at such a young age. The transition from a FCS QB at North Dakota State in Bismark, North Dakota to the starting quarterback of the Eagles in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has been remarkably seamless.

"It's a little different," Wentz told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show when comparing North Dakota to Philly. "It's a little more fast paced, there's a lot more things going on. Traffic is a little heavier, that's for sure. But, you know, I love it. There's a lot of things to do out here and like I said, the passion for Eagles football is pretty awesome.

"It's still blue-collar hard working people. That's the same kind of motto back home. You've gotta earn what you get back home and it's the same type of thing here."

Doug Pederson has kept things fairly conservative for Wentz, who is averaging just 6.82 yards per attempt, 25th in NFL. But don't let that fool you -- Wentz loves to air it out.

"Obviously. Obviously," Wentz said when asked if his favorite play calls are the deep throws. "Without a doubt, yeah. I think every quarterback loves that. But yeah, any of those down the field shots I'm a big fan of."

His favorite play of the season?

"Either that [the 58-yard completion to Bryce Treggs in Week 9 vs. the Giants] or probably that first touchdown pass to Jordan [Matthews] against Cleveland. That first drive was pretty sweet."

At 6'5, 237-pounds Wentz runs a 4.77, but has just 46 rushing yards in nine games, 24th among NFL QB's. He's not thrilled about that.

"I definitely want to be a passer first, but when things break down I like to still make plays but I'm still keeping my eyes down field," Wentz said. "I just found out, I believe I was last in rushing yards as a quarterback -- after the game someone told me. That was a little disappointing, but I'm not too worried about that."

This week, Wentz will face his toughest test yet -- at the 6-2-1 Seattle Seahawks.

"They're doing some really good things," Wentz said of the Seahawks. "Defensively they don't do a lot, they don't mix it up a lot, but they play really fast. They're coached well and obviously everyone talks about that stadium out there."
