Thousands Fight Against Childhood Cancer At Annual Lemon Run

CENTER CITY (CBS) -- The eighth annual Lemon Run took place today in Fairmount Park, drawing thousands of all ages. The run raises hundreds of thousands to help children.

"We are so blessed to be doing what we do," said Liz Scott, the co-executive director of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Her daughter Alexandra started the non-profit when she began selling lemonade at just four years old. Since then the organization has grown, holding numerous events including the Lemon Run, an event that draws many families and kids battling cancer.

"I never realized until Alex started her stand how empowering it is, to take control, to say, I am going to do something, I am going to fight back against this disease," Scott said.

Sonia Rita brought her three- year-old Isabell, who was diagnosed with cancer two weeks after that birthday. She's had surgeries and chemo to stop spinal tumors, but today, they're hoping Izzy will walk across the finish line.

"We went into her first birthday thinking we'd go into the next milestones like walking, but that was not in the cards for us," Rita said.

She said today is about a brighter future for everyone battling cancer.

"It's definitely a day to celebrate and to just- have a lot of hope."

The Lemon Run is expected to raise more than $300,000 dollars.
