CBS 3 Pet Project: Keeping Your Pet Safe In The Fall

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Each season brings new fun for people and their pets, whether it be a summertime walk on the beach or a dip into the lake in the Spring. However, each season also comes with hidden dangers that pet owners need to be aware of to better protect them.

Fall is  a great season for going on walks but as the days get shorter, pet owners will need to choose their walking time carefully. It's better to take your dog on a walk in the morning or early afternoon, especially if you allow your pup to go off of their leash for a portion of the walk to ensure you are able to see them at all times and other walkers are able to see them coming as well. A good idea may be to get a light-up or reflective collar so your dog is easier to spot.

And if you go into the woods for the walk you may want to put an orange vest on the dog so people will not mistake them for a wild animal from far away.

Another thing to consider in the fall is the change in temperature -- With winter coming some neighbors may already be putting out anti-freeze or other chemicals on their sidewalks. It's important pet owners are vigilant because these chemicals may taste sweet to dogs or cats but can make them very sick.
