PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Doctor Strange lit it up at the box office over the weekend.
The debuting, Marvel comic book-inspired thriller, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, earned an estimated $85 million as it ran away to a first-place finish.
The weekend's other two new attractions took the next two spots:
The animated comedy, Trolls, was the runner-up, opening with a healthy total of $46 million, while the Mel Gibson-directed World War II drama, Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield, took in $15 million and finished third.
As for the box office leader of the last two weekends, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween, it placed fourth with $8-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were over twice those of last weekend, and significantly higher than those of a year ago.
