High School Top 10: North Penn, Springfield & Interboro Teams To Beat

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Last year, the PIAA, the governing body of high school sports in Pennsylvania, made the move in 2016 to a new 6A classification, and it's given a number of teams an opportunity to win District titles in their perspective categories that wouldn't traditionally have the chance.

Under the previous 4A system, the top 16 teams in 4A (large schools) made the District 1 playoffs, while only the top eight teams qualified in 3A, with schools the size of Springfield (Delco) and Academy Park. Now schools that size are 5A, and under the current system, the top 16 teams make the playoffs in 5A.

This year, North Penn tops the 6A tournament, with Neshaminy the No. 2 seed. The teams that could bear watching here are No. 3 Perkiomen Valley and No. 5 Ridley, which has won this year with a stingy defense.

At 5A, Springfield (Delco) is the No. 1 seed. The Cougars are 9-1, which includes a victory over Ridley, though watch for an all-Delaware County final with No. 2 seed Academy Park. Upper Dublin, the No. 4 seed and last year's 4A champs, could be a factor here. The Cardinals played a very competitive schedule and their one loss came against 6A Plymouth-Whitemarsh.

At 4A, Interboro is the team to beat and the Bucs should be, after beating last year's defending 3A champion Academy Park. Interboro is on a five-game winning streak.

The 6A district championship will take place Friday, Nov. 25. The 5A championship will also be played Friday, Nov. 25, and the 4A title game will take place next Friday, Nov. 11.
