Police Shoot, Kill Dog After It Turns On Man Walking It

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police say officers shot and killed a pit bull after the dog attacked the man who was walking it in Southwest Philadelphia.

It happened around 8 a.m. Sunday in the 6500 block of Greenway Avenue in the city's Kingsessing neighborhood.

Authorities say a 50-year-old man was walking a stray pit bull that he found a few days earlier when the dog turned on him and bit him in the face.

Police say during the man's struggle to pry the dog off of him, a woman who witnessed the attack tried to help by stabbing the dog. Authorities say at that point the pit bull became more aggressive.

Police say officers arrived and fired several shots at the dog, killing it.

The man was taken to Presbyterian Hospital for treatment.

No one else was injured.
