Friends Come Together, Display Heart In Susan G. Komen 3-Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Susan G Komen 3-Day started in and around Philadelphia Friday. One of the largest groups, Friends with Heart, has 56 walkers.

The heart of the team is 49 year old Sharon Slosarik who has stage four breast cancer. "They're my team and they're my family as well," Sharon said as they set out on the first day.

Sharon's sister, Dawn Ingrassia says they manage to have plenty of fun even though the team is walking for a serious cause. "I keep telling people as long as they don't have a cure, I'm gonna be here walking," Dawn said

The 3-day walk started bright and early Friday morning at at the Willow Grove Mall with hundreds committing to walk 20 miles a day for three days.

"This truly is the City of Brotherly Love. Community effort is tremendous here," said Dr. Sheri Prentiss. She is the national spokesperson for the Komen 3-Day. "For me as an 8-year breast cancer survivor, this means the world to me. 750 people show up to walk 60 miles in 3 days all to bring an end to breast cancer so I can live. It's awesome," Dr. Prentiss said.

Sharon was told she wouldn't survive, but was determined to fight for her daughter Jennifer. "I don't know if I could have gotten through this, the way I did, if it wasn't for these people," Jennifer says.

The people on Sharon's team, Friends with Heart, come from all over to meet the weekend long challenge. Her husband John has this perspective: "Physically it's hard, but it's not as hard as chemo."
