25th Billy Lake Basketball Marathon To Be Held At Haverford College

by Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On this coming Saturday, October 15th, the 25th Annual Bill Lake Basketball Marathon benefiting the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the ALS Association will be held at Haverford College.

Patricia Lake Quinn helped start the basketball marathon 25 years ago to honor the memory of her late husband Billy, who had died of ALS at the age of 42.

"We had the first one at Archbishop Prendergast and we raised a couple thousand dollars. It was pretty great, really just a great vehicle for honoring Billy and expressing our sorrow and putting all that to good use," said Quinn.

Since then, Quinn says the basketball marathon has helped to raise over a half million dollars, with much of the money going towards ALS research.

This year's event starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday and runs all day.

In addition to wall-to-wall hoops featuring some top high school teams, there will also be a silent auction of sports memorabilia.
