Social Media Erupts During First Presidential Debate

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The first presidential debate ended on Monday night, but the conversation continued to buzz on social media and the debate about how the candidates measured up, is just getting started.

Online, the conversation got started before the debate even got underway and the buzzed continued after.

Users took notice of superficial things early on, tweeting about Donald Trump's sniffling and Hillary Clinton's blinking for instance. As the nominees began debating the issues, the trending topics fell in line.

Clinton vs. Trump: The Most Memorable One-Liners

With 100 million Americans expected to have tuned in, the Super Bowl of debates took over more than a dozen television channels and inundated social media.

As the candidates took the stage, #DebateNight and #Debates2016 were already trending on Twitter.

Right off the top, Clinton's attack on Trump's tax plan put social media into a tailspin. Clinton called his plan "Trumped Up Trickle Down," which 30 minutes into the debate, was tweeted nearly 30,000 times and may have prompted a tweet from Trump's official account, highlighting his plan to create jobs.

As the questions continued, the phrase Fact Check started trending, with some users saying perhaps we needed to have a fact check scrolling across the screen.

Then, the conversation turned to minority issues which once again spurred activity online.

By debate's end, the phrase African American had been used over 100,000 times on Twitter.

At last check, the phrase Donald Trump was mentioned over 1.5 million times while Hilary (spelled incorrectly with one L) garnered just over 230,000 tweets.
