Hundreds March Through Center City To Help End Rape Culture

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hundreds of protesters marched from City Hall to Rittenhouse Square Saturday in an effort to raise awareness about rape culture that compromises the safety of so many people.

Hundreds turned out for the 5th annual "March To End Rape Culture."

"We're just here to educate the city that rape culture's not acceptable," said press organizer Robin Strough. "Rape culture would be the existence of rape jokes that people don't say aren't funny. Rape culture is people getting sentenced to three months when they've raped an unconscious woman. Rape culture is the term, 'boys will be boys.'"

Strough says this year's participation doubled in size from last year. She explained why it's important for her to participate in this march."

"Because I'm a survivor," she said. "It's important for me and my children to know what no means. It's important what consent means."

But Strough points out it's not just those who have been raped that are impacted by rape culture.

"Rape culture is when a woman is afraid to walk down the street," she explained, "survivor or not, she's still afraid to walk down the street."
