Villanova Heads Up To Lafayette On Saturday

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Villanova Wildcats will head up to Easton this weekend to play their final non-league game of the season Saturday against Lafayette.

The Wildcats are 2-1 here so far in 2016. This past Saturday they opened Colonial Athletic Association play with an impressive 40-21 win over the Towson Tigers.

"I think for the first time this year we put together a real nice package, offensively and defensively," Villanova head coach Andy Talley tells KYW Newsradio. "We were operating on all four cylinders and we played well for four quarters, which I was happy with. We went out early and established ourselves, which was very important against a team like Towson."

Listen to the entire interview with Villanova's Andy Talley:

Villanova quarterback Zach Bednarczyk was brilliant against Towson, completing 20 of 26 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception and also rushed for 37 yards.

"He really has a strong arm," Talley says of his quarterback. "He had a lot of zip on the ball and he's extremely accurate, a lot of people don't realize that. Not only does he throw a great pass, but he's very, very accurate. And I think we gave him a lot of protection, the offensive line did a great job."

On Saturday, Villanova and Lafayette will meet on the football field for the first time since 1920. The Leopards are off to a 1-2 start here in 2016.

"They played a real tough Delaware team early on (lost 24-6)," Talley says, "and really could've won the game against Princeton last weekend (35-31 loss). So I know we have our hands full with them."

Lafayette is led by senior quarterback Drew Reed who is completing 67% of his passes and has six touchdown throws in three games. Five of those touchdowns have been caught by junior wideout Matt Mrazek.

Villanova and Lafayette will kickoff at 6:00pm on Saturday.
