FDA Warns About The Dangers Of Tattoo Ink

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The FDA is issuing new warnings about tattoo ink. Some people have reported sensitivity, allergic reactions and infections.

The FDA says there have been seven voluntary recalls of tattoo inks since 2004.

One after 19 people contracted a serious infection. The tattoo industry is unregulated by the FDA.

That is something that could change.

"What's concerning about tattoo inks is that we really don't know what's going into these tattoo inks," said Dr. Arisa Ortiz, a dermatologist.

The FDA notes that many pigments in inks are industrial grade colors used for printer ink or automobile paint.
