SEPTA Using Express Buses To Supplement Regional Rail Service

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With Labor Day now behind us and school back in session, SEPTA looks to handle more passengers on the regional rails, still recovering from a loss of a big chunk of their fleet over the summer.

Starting today, SEPTA is rolling out a different way to get around.

SEPTA is scrambling to keep up with demand as they work on the Silverliner repairs. And the latest temporary solution is express bus service, which supplements regular rail service at several stations.

Buses go to a select few stations and, depending on the line, take folks to Fern Rock, Suburban or AT&T stations.

For example, in Jenkintown, a bus comes by every 15 minutes, stops in Elkins Park, then takes riders to Fern Rock where they can catch the subway for the rest of their trip.

With trains moving along, only three people hopped a bus. Katie is one of them.

"Since the trains have been crowded and we are standing a lot I just thought I'd see how this goes, see if it's smooth."

A SEPTA spokeswoman says there was light travel on all of the express buses during the morning rush.
