HS Soccer Players Go4TheGoal In Honor Of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- You'll be seeing a lot of the color gold in the month of September in recognition of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. Now, some high school soccer players are showing support.

They were laced up in gold for a scrimmage between Lenape High School and Williamstown High, soccer players wearing gold shoe laces to raise awareness and money for pediatric cancer.

"I think it's a really great cause." said Lenape senior Megan Quimby.

Coach Ryan Frantz added, "It keeps my brother's memory alive."

For Coach Ryan Frantz it's personal, his twin brother died from cancer when he was 18.

"It's an amazing cause and it really means a lot to me and my family," Coach Frantz said.

Money raised from the athletes lacing up in gold will go to local pediatric patients.

The program was started by a South Jersey family who lost their son to cancer.

"We started the program almost the day he was diagnosed seeing the need of other kids." Dr. Richard Stefanacci explained.

His son died from cancer just before his 15th birthday and the family started a foundation called Go4theGoal to help other young patients.

"To make the experience more tolerable so they get to their goal of beating pediatric cancer," Dr. Stefanacci said.

The soccer players were wearing Go4theGoal goal t-shirts. The money raised goes to help ease financial burdens for families, grant wishes to kids, support hospital programs, and fund research.

"With everybody helping out it can go a long way with finding a cure, someday. That's what we're really in the goal for." Coach Frantz said.

"It's actually really an honor because so many kids suffer this, and obviously cancer is terrible and they lose so much of their childhood quite frankly it's totally unfair," Megan added.

The can't fix the unfairness, but they can bring hope lacing up in gold.
