Mock Town Inside Of Assisted Living Facility Designed To Help People With Alzheimer's

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio (CBS) -- An assisted living community in Ohio is giving people with Alzheimer's a new way to live by recreating a whole town all under one roof.

Inside Lantern dementia facilities you'll find hallways carpeted green to resemble grass, ceilings painted with clouds and a main street complete with store fronts, including a Barber Shop/Salon. To residents it appears like a regular neighborhood -- down to their apartment entrances made to look like individual homes from the 1930s and '40s complete with a lamp post and rocking chairs out on the porch.

Images of the unique living quarters have been earning some praise on social media.

Lantern explains the design concept as a time capsule of sorts. It's part of a program called "Svayus," developed by Lantern CEO, Jean Makesh. The program is intended to cue and retrieve memories to help residents who have Alzheimer's or Dementia, live a full  and happy life.

Daily activities like shaving are designed to help strengthen residents' minds and other group activities help foster community. Aromatherapy is also used and subtle changes in lighting are made to help residents get through their day.

It's also meant to improve the relationships between fellow residents as well as between family members and their loved ones they are visiting.
