Brotherly Love: Fallen Heroes Softball Tournament

By Ukee Washington

EVESHAM, NJ (CBS) -- First responders often say they're like a big family, so when they lose a member, it hits hard. As Ukee Washington shows us, several departments got together to remember their fallen heroes.

In the golden sunlight of late summer, the national anthem, a prayer, and the first pitch. Then it was game on in Evesham. Eight teams competed in The Fallen Heroes First Responder Softball Tournament at Arrowhead Park.

"Just for some good fun and acknowledging the people who passed away too early," Evesham Police Chief Christopher Chew said.

Fire fighters were there to remember the late Lt. Matt Hempel of the Evesham Fire Rescue Department. Chief Bryan Ward explained, "Tonight we also wear number 10 on our back. We're playing for him."

Lt. Hempel took his own life in February. His wife hopes that being open about it can help others.

Suzanne Hempel said, "I think this is great that they're doing this. I think anything that brings awareness to it is good."

His daughter Savanna Painter was glad to see the hundreds of people who came out to support the cause. "I love all this stuff honestly," she said. "It just makes me feel good that people care."

The teams were also remembering Det. Sgt. Edward Zubrzycki of the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, who died in May 2015. Chief Chew said his department knew Sgt. Zubrzycki well.

"It's nice that the community is behind us and is pulling for one of our own, one of our families in need," Chief Chew said. "So it feels good. It's a great night."

The proceeds from the tournament will go to the families of fallen heroes. The organizers hope the event can ease the pain just a little for those left behind.
