Low Cost Ways To Keep Kids Active Late In Summer

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Keeping children engaged and physically active during the dog days of summer isn't easy, but there are ways to do it without spending a bundle.

When it's hot and humid, playing outside isn't always a thrill. You can wait until evening to walk in a shaded park or by a creek, or take it inside says Karin Richards, Chair of the Kinesiology Department at the University of the Sciences:

"Put a tic tac toe board on the floor, and actually you're going to have to run up to put something in your square, run back to yourself or a teammate. We could even do Simon Says where we get a little more active...Simon Says do jumping jacks...Simon Says jump up and down, hop on one foot."

Other options she suggests include pulling out the sprinkler, or that slip and slide that's been stashed in the back of the garage, jumping on a trampoline, or maybe going to a rock gym where the kids can climb.

You can also take the young ones to the mall before it opens, let them run off some steam or enjoy the indoor playground.
