Immaculata Hires Jayson Hyman To Take Over Men's Hoops

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Division III Immaculata University out in Malvern has decided to go with a familiar face as its new head men's basketball coach.

Former Mighty Macs standout player Jayson Hyman is taking over the program. He replaces Terrence Stewart who left to take over the reins at Division II Georgian Court University.

"Very exciting," Hyman tells KYW Newsradio. "Can't wait to get started."

Listen to the entire interview with new Immaculata men's basketball head coach Jayson Hyman:

This will be be the first college head coaching job for Hyman who spent two years as a player at Immaculata (2006-08), averaging 11.2 points per game. He was a key member of the team that went to the Division III NCAA Tournament in 2008.

Hyman spent last season as an assistant coach at Division II West Chester University. Prior to that he was an assistant on the women's staff at Immaculata. He says it was very early during his stint with the Mighty Macs women's squad that he realized coaching really was for him.

"I almost love it as much as playing," Hyman says. "You give a kid a blueprint and you take them on the court and help them succeed. I mean it's something to watch and it's something I love."

Hyman takes over a team that went 10-16 overall last season, but finished 9-9 in a tough Colonial State Athletic Conference. He talks about what Immaculata fans can expect out the Mighty Macs with him in charge.

"We're going to be very tough," Hyman says. "Very defense-focused. We're going to play well, share the ball, unselfish and we're going to play together. We want to win and have fun winning at the same time. We want to win on the court, off the court, just be successful individuals in general. And we're all going to share that, even the coaching staff, we're going to buy in to that concept, and that's what we're going to show out on the court. We're going to be a team that plays together at all times, plays tough at all times. We're going to represent our school well."

Hyman is slated to make his head coach debut on November 15th when the Mighty Macs host Delaware Valley University.
