Philadelphia Runners Brave The Excessive Heat, Keep Moving

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An excessive heat warning remains in effect for the Delaware Valley through 8 p.m. Tuesday, but the sweltering temperatures aren't stopping people from staying active.

"Having groups to run with, like the one here behind me, definitely helps make the suffering go a little easier," said Liz Pagonis, who organizes a running group at Philadelphia Runner in Center City.

The group gathered at Philadelphia Runner Monday night to run four miles together to the Philadelphia Brewing Company in Kensington.

Many are training for the upcoming Philly 10K, even as the heat index is making temps feel in the triple digits.

"Dealing with hot weather is something that we've become accustomed to," said Ryan Callahan, Philly 10K race director.

Callahan said preparing for a big run involves hydrating well in advance.

"It's not just about bringing a bottle of water on your run," he said. "But also the day before, even two days before or even that whole week leading up to it, make sure you're staying hydrated."

Dr. Jack Kelly, director of emergency medicine at Einstein, said even if you're not being very active, you should be drinking a lot more water than you think.

"We should be drinking a 20 oz bottle every hour during these really hot summer days," Dr. Kelly said.

The type of clothes you wear can also make a big difference.

"You want to avoid cotton," Pagonis said. "Wear synthetic fabrics. You don't want it to be skintight and trap the sweat to your body."

The group made it to their destination in about 40 minutes, but it was definitely not the type of conditions for beginners.

"I feel very proud. I'm going to call my mom to let her know and add this to my resume as well," joked runner Mustafa Sualp.

The Philly 10K is set for Saturday, August 28th.
