Philly Airport Adds 'Relief Stations' For Service Dogs To Do Their Business

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Some dogs are getting relief at airports throughout the country including here in Philadelphia. Service animal relief stations have been in place for a week now at Philly International Airport.

Following a US Department of Transportation regulation, Philadelphia International Airport, now has seven service animal relief areas inside security checkpoint in each terminal. Small traveling pups can use it too.

"They are 8x7 feet. They have artificial grass. The area is boarded on by three sides by a three foot high wall and contains waste stations with waste bags."

And a faux red hydrant.

Mary Flannery is a spokeswoman for Philadelphia International Airport.

"So the idea is that particularly for passengers who are connecting from one flight to another so they would have to leave security, so their animal could relieve itself and then have to come back in and be re-screened by TSA.

She says no tax dollars are being used for this -- it's included in airport budgeted responsibilities.
