Philadelphia Pools Approaching Closing Dates As Summer Winds Down

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With a blistering heatwave expected to last through the weekend, a swimming pool is a much needed relief.

More than 70 public pools are scattered throughout Philadelphia, and serve as a mini-oasis for families.

But with less than a month until the first day of school, pools are beginning to shut down, starting today. A spokeswoman for the city's Parks and Recreation Department says they have to stagger closings because of staffing issues, with many lifeguards going back to college.

She also says it is nearly impossible for all of the pools to be emptied on the same day, so they must close one by one. All Philadelphia public pools will be closed by August 26th.
