Phillies Look To Bounce Back In LA Behind Velasquez

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies continue their California road trip tonight with another game in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

The Phillies are 2-2 on this six-game trip after dropping the opening game in this series with the Dodgers last night, 9-4. The Dodgers got off to a fast start against losing pitcher Zach Eflin, racing out to a 6-0 lead and never looking back. LA hit four home runs in the win, including a solo shot be former Phillie Chase Utley.

Tonight it will be right-hander Vince Velasquez on the mound for the Phillies. He is 8-3 with a 3.33 ERA. He got a no-decision in his last start, allowing two runs in five innings against the Giants at Citizens Bank Park in a game San Francisco eventually won in ten innings, 3-2. Velasquez will be making his first career start against the Dodgers tonight. He made one brief relief appearance against them last year while with Houston.

Los Angeles will counter on the mound with right-hander Kenta Maeda. He is 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA. This will be his first career appearance against the Phillies.

The Phillies are in fourth place in the National League East with a record of 52-62. Los Angeles is second in the National League West with a record of 63-49.

KYW's Matt Leon spoke with Stephen Gross of the Allentown Morning Call about the Phils, Velasquez and what to look for the rest of the season.
