Thousands Of Kids Gathered On Art Museum Steps, Writing To Break A Guinness World Record

CENTER CITY (CBS) -- About 3,000 children gathered at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to break a Guinness world record for writing.

A Philadelphia literacy nonprofit called 'Mighty Writers' set out to break the Guinness Book World Record for most people writing at the same place, at the same time. Executive director Tim Whittaker said with the spotlight on Philadelphia, the timing made sense.

"We were looking for a way to showcase the literacy crisis in the city, as well as the kids, you know, we're crazy about the kids in Philly," Whittaker said. "So we thought when the DNC is in town, it's the perfect time."

The topic for writers was relevant with the DNC in town. The writing prompt was, 'if I were President for a day.' From there the kids took their dreams to paper.

"People that are poor, I'd give the homes and food," one young writer told KYW Newsradio.

Another writer was focused on peace.

"I would try to stop all the shootings if I can," another young writer said.

Whittaker said when you write, you learn to express yourself.

"I really believe that writing boosts self esteem and when you have self esteem, good things happen, success follows."
