Gloucester County To Return Control Of Police To Clayton Borough

by KYW's David Madden

(WOODBURY, NJ) --  For more than 2 years, the Gloucester County Prosecutor has overseen day to day operations in the Clayton Borough Police department. That supervision ends next month with installation of a new chief and major equipment and procedural changes within the department.

Elected officials asked for the intervention after the former police chief retired in 2014. There was a subsequent battle over who would take over settled, in part, with a court order to promote from within. Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton believes the time for supervision is ready to end.

"The Clayton Police department stands ready to start a new chapter in serving the residents in the Clayton community," Dalton told KYW Newsradio. "The Gloucester County Prosecutor's office has implemented many changes which the Clayton officers have embraced."

Among those changes, a new rank structure to avoid promotion disputes in the future. But that's far from all.

"They've undergone significant training, an upgrade of computers and other equipment which the officers really have took to," Dalton said, "and I believe they are a better department now than when we took over 27 months ago."

Sergeant Andrew Davis takes the reins of the department on August 11th.
