KYW's Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Stroke is not only frightening it is also a particularly frustrating condition because if you're a stroke survivor, you're at high risk for having another stroke.

It gets worse: we know that recurrent strokes are more likely to lead to death and disability. That's due to the fact that parts of the brain have already been injured by the initial stroke. Your best protection is to know the signs and seek treatment as quickly as possible.

During a stroke, every second counts.

It may help to remember the word F.A.S.T. so you can spot the signs of a stroke. It stands for: face drooping. Is one side of your face numb or drooping? Also be mindful of arm weakness or slurring in your speech. The most important may be the letter t in fast. Time to call 911 and get to the emergency room.
