Phillies GM Matt Klentak On Trade Deadline: 'It's Been Very Active'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies should be looking to unload some of their assets as the August 1st Major League Baseball trade deadline looms.

Phillies first-year general manager Matt Klentak admits the phone lines have been hot of late.

"It's been very active the last few days," Klentak told CSNPhilly.com. "I think, once we got within two weeks of the deadline, industry wide, I think it's really picked up a lot. There's been a lot of dialogue. Truth be told, a lot of those conversations go nowhere. And obviously so far, none of them have led to anyhting. Some are fairly superficial, some are fairly details, and we just continue to take the calls and see what may happen.

"We're open-minded to ways to improve our club, but for the now and also for the future."

The Phillies' top two assets are expected to be starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson and closer Jeanmar Gomez.

Hellickson, 29, is 7-7 with a 3.84 ERA and was marvelous in his last outing, allowing five hits and one run in eight innings of work.

Gomez, 28, has 26 saves in 29 opportunities with a 2.76 ERA.
