Temple University Announces New Interim President
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temple University has announced a new interim president after the abrupt resignation of President Neil Theobald today. The resignation came after a bumpy few weeks which included the firing of a provost, and the discovery of a major budget shortfall.
The University's board of trustees announced a resolution with Theobald, accepted his resignation and announced the election of acting president Richard Englert. Board spokesman Kevin Feeley said the budget issue was also huge.
"The fact that there was a 22-million dollar deficit, that's a significant shortfall, and the board's concern was both the amount and the fact that it was unaware of the deficit until well after it had arisen."
As the announcement was made inside Sullivan Hall, outside a small crowd was calling for the new president to denounce plans for the stadium. Temple Junior Philip Gregory said he hopes this will move the university in a new direction.
"With the ousting of the president, we're hoping that maybe some moral compass will awaken inside the board of trustees and they will say we actually do care about North Philadelphia."
