Philadelphia To Experience Dangerous Temperatures As DNC Rolls Into Town

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As many people from around the country descend on Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention next week, the temperatures will be surging to near-record levels, making our city feel unusually hot and humid.

It's a good thing we've got great ice cream and water ice to offer!

LATEST WEATHER

An Excessive Heat Watch will be in effect this weekend - this will become an Excessive Heat Warning, a warning that not only will temperatures be nearly 10 degrees above normal, but the heat index values may surge into the triple digits.

Heat Pet Safety

Even though it is July, and we're used to heat, this is a stretch to take seriously. We won't get much relief even overnight, as temperatures will stay near 80, and this hot stretch will last for the better part of a week.

FORECASTS

It's looking like Saturday will be the most uncomfortable day, with a high of 97 and a "Feels Like," temperature of over 100. Sunday's temperatures and dewpoints will be just a few degrees lower, still scorching but not quite as oppressive. And then we're back to the steam bath Monday as the high of 96 potentially ties the previous record.

All the heat precautions apply: check on anyone you know that may need help staying cool, be careful with kids and pets outside in the heat, and drink more water than you think you need.

Oh, and try to find some of that great ice cream!
