New Ryan Howard Training Facility In South Philly Gives Kids The Opportunity To Aim For The Fences

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies and Ryan Howard celebrated the opening of a youth baseball training facility in South Philadelphia that is named after the star slugger.

Ryan and Krystle Howard's foundation helped build it. The slugger said it is about giving the kids the resources to succeed on and off the field.

"It's not about having my name on the wall," he said. "It's about providing the opportunities for these kids to have a safe place and a good place to be able to come and fulfill their dreams baseball-wise, softball-wise, educational-wise, that's the most important thing."

17-year-old 2nd baseman Ismael Garcia will be grinding it out on the turf here to take his game to the next level.

"It's gonna help a lot in the winter when you can't do nothing outside," Garcia said. "You can come inside and do extra work."

Howard said he wishes he had access to a place like this when he was growing up.

"We've got cages, we've got L-screens. We've got all the stuff that we need."
