Mayock: NFL Needs To 'Blow Up The Rule Book'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The arguably most confusing rule in sports is the National Football League's catch rule.
Determining what is or isn't a catch in 2016 has become completely subjective, and infuriating, thanks to the changes over the rule in recent years.
"It's so easy," NFL VP of officiating Dean Blandino quipped when asked what a catch is, "When they hold on to the ball."
NFL analyst Mike Mayock has a different idea for the NFL.
"To be honest with you, I really think they need to blow up the whole rule book because I think this is one of the biggest problems in the game," Mayock told the 94WIP Morning Show. "I think they need to take a step back and put together a committee of guys that can sit down -- outside of the competition committee initially -- and just say, 'OK, look where we are today. The game is bigger, it's faster. We're playing on the same size field they played a hundred years ago, yet the players are twice as big and twice as fast. What are we gonna do to protect our players, but to make the game as entertaining as we can without so many damn penalties?'
