Local Bastille Day Celebration In Fairmount Honors Victims Of Nice Attack
FAIRMOUNT (CBS) -- The Bastille Day celebration went on in Fairmount on Saturday, despite this week's massacre in Nice, France. Hundreds gathered to take part in the annual French festival, and pay tribute to the victims.
Families and neighbors gathered along Fairmount Avenue to celebrate Bastille Day.
The special day included a watermelon guillotine, and a Tasty Kakes smash against the Eastern State Penitentiary.
In addition to some fun, they also honored the victims in Nice.
Tim & Lauren live in the neighborhood, and wanted to come out in spite of the attack.
"We were kind of wondering what the atmosphere would be like in light of it, but everyone seems like they are having a good time, but I am glad they acknowledged it," Lauren said.
Tim added this event represented support for one of America's oldest allies.
"It was a terrible event, and it's really sad," he said. "And we should show our support for France, and everyone really."
And Gail brought her sister, but said they will have a good time, no matter what.
"It's just a horrible thing, but you have to keep going, you can't let these things stop you."
