Penn Summer Camp Teaches Teens About Career In Vet Medicine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Teenagers interested in pursuing a career in the veterinary medicine are participating in a week long summer camp hosted by the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.

15 high school students from across the country are enrolled in Penn Vet's Summer Veterinary Exploration Through Science or VETS program. Among them 17-year-old Haley Weber of Michigan.

"We got to see an ultra sound on a cat so that was pretty interesting."

The kids are participating in discussions, labs, clinics, and demonstrations designed to provide an understanding of the profession.

Dr. Deborah Mandell was examining a small dog in the emergency room.

"We went through what he came in for, what his presenting complaint was, what we found last night went through a physical exam, let them listen to his heart, he was having arrhythmia so that was pretty exciting and just went through the process of hat is happening now."

Sessions at New Bolton Center large animal campus and at the working dog center are also taking place.
