Pennsylvania's First Mormon Temple Comes To Ben Franklin Parkway

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Pennsylvania's first Mormon Temple is just days from completion.

"It's beautifully appointed and people will just feel God's love for them," said Elder Milan Kunz, a senior leader in the region's Church of Latter Day Saints.

He said the years long journey to build a meeting house and Temple on Ben Franklin Parkway is nearly over, with construction set to complete by the end of June.

"It's taken a little bit longer because we had to do an excavation to provide for a two story underground parking lot," Kunz said, "but it is worth it, it is beautiful inside and out."

Kunz said the new LDS Temple will serve about 50,000 people in the region. Bruce and Nancy Winn of Delaware will oversee the functioning of the Temple, which will opened in August.

"We will open to the church for anyone to see," he said.

The Church has already received tens of thousands of requests for open house tours.

Kunz says once the Temple is dedicated on September 18, it will be available only to members of the LDS Church. He said the Meeting House, which is nearby, will remain open to the public.
