First Day Of Summer Means Harvest Time For NJ Farmers

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) -- In South Jersey, the first day of summer marks the tastiest season of the year.

Many types of Jersey fresh produce are hitting the local markets, from squash and green veggies to the Garden State's famous sweet corn.

Washington Township farmer David Duffield says, to him, the beginning of summer means reaping the benefits of many months of hard work.

Sweet corn accounts for about $17 million annually in the state's billion dollar agricultural industry. Farmers say that cooler than usual Spring has caused most of the corn crop to be a little slower hitting the market this summer, but they do expect to see everything ready for the 4th of July.

Blueberry growers are operating in full swing in Hammonton. The annual Red, White and Blueberry Festival is set for June 26.

Roadside stands, like the 206 Farm Market, are loaded with fresh berries.

The Monza family has been farming for more than 80 years and they say it's fun to hear how far people come to buy blueberries from their stand.
