PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It is considered a landmark study in the area of child care and it should be a comforting one for young parents as well a grandparents.
The information is from a Johns Hopkins study which found that grandparents watching children actually reduces the incidence of injury by 50 percent or more.
The reason I like this is many people have a feeling that older people might be less vigilant or unable to provide quality care, but the important issue here is the experience of raising children combined with a genuine interest in the children is a positive factor.
The other reason I like this study is it reinforces the idea that people can have a continued value. One of the biggest problems that people face as they get older is a feeling of worthlessness.
Spending important quality time and adding to the love and support of a grandchild or other child can be a major source of happiness and a tremendous value to the child.
This report serves as an example that seniors can make a major contribution.
