10th Annual Alex Scott Telethon Sets Record, Raises Nearly $5 Million For Pediatric Cancer Research

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  CBS 3 and The CW Philly's 10th annual Alex Scott Telethon, a 14-hour on-air benefit for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, raised nearly $5 million ($4,986,068) for pediatric cancer research today, a record for the fundraiser which began in 2007. Over its 10 years on-air, the event has raised more than $17million for the cause.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of 4-year-old cancer patient Alexandra "Alex" Scott whose lemonade stands for cancer research launched a national fundraising movement that has only grown since her death in 2004. The fundraiser helps kick off Lemonade Days 2014 (June 10-12) when thousands of volunteers from coast-to-coast will raise money for the Foundation by hosting lemonade stands of their own.

A Stand for Hope, the Alex Scott Telethon, aired in special segments and "Alex hours" from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the broadcast day. Segments were also streamed live on CBSPhilly.com.

CBS 3's Jim Donovan, Brooke Thomas, Katie Fehlinger, Meisha Johnson, Ukee Washington, Jessica Dean, Kate Bilo, Don Bell and Stephanie Stahl spearheaded the 14-hour effort along with Alex's parents, Liz and Jay Scott. CBS 3's Vittoria Woodill hosted a lemonade stand to collect donations in Ocean City, New Jersey at Rita's Water Ice on The Boardwalk as part of her "Tori Down the Shore" series and Pat Gallen reported live from lemonade stands at Tacony Academy Charter School and Pat's Steaks in South Philadelphia.

On-air personalities from CBS RADIO also joined their TV partners in the fight against childhood cancers. Valerie Knight and Frank Lewis of the Breakfast Club at 98.1 WOGL helped staff the phones along with Dom Giordano from Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, KYW Newsradio 1060's Ian Bush, Andie Summers and Frank Lario of 92.5XTU, Hollis Thomas of SportsRadio 94WIP and Cage and Bex from 96.5 AMP Radio.

Former CBS 3 Anchor Pat Ciarrocchi also made an appearance on air in support of the cause along with Big Five Coaches Phil Martelli of St. Joseph's University and Fran Dunphy from Temple University, the Phillie Phanatic, the 76ers Dance Team and Swoop from the Eagles.

CBS 3 acknowledges the support of Local Tri-State Toyota Dealers, Ashley Furniture Home Store, The Malvern School and Ackerman Security Systems in making this special fundraising effort possible.
