Philly Beer Week Kicks Off With Hammer Of Glory Pub Crawl

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The infamous Hammer of Glory is making a pub crawl of its own, before it is used to tap the ceremonial first keg to begin Philly Beer Week 2016. The Hammer will make 30 stops, mostly at bars, throughout the city. Each establishment finds its own flamboyant or outrageous way of getting the Hammer to the next bar. The final stop will be in Fishtown, says Beer Week Executive Director Kristine Kennedy.

"It wraps up at 7 p.m. at the Fillmore, where it cracks the first firkin," Kennedy said.

She said the hammer is a treasured piece that no one wants to lose.

"It was definitely outright stolen once," she said. "It's been misplaced a couple of times. But in the end, I don't think anybody wants the responsibility of holding onto the Hammer for too long."

Mayor Kenney and brewing legend Joe Ortlieb are expected to be on hand. Beer Week features ten days of parties and tastings.
