New Old City Apartments Plan To Resemble Iconic Philadelphia Industrial Building

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A six-story apartment project is planned at the former site of a iconic post industrial modern building in Old City.

The National Products building had a unique look with orange tiles and steel signage that read, 'China, Glass, Silver, Food Service Equipment since 1928.' Demolition of the site has been taking place over the past few months to make way for a six story building.

Mike Hare is the Senior Vice President for Wilmington developer Buccini-Pollin Group and says they will be following history.

"The historic commission has required that we at least replicate the orange tile," he said. "As well, as there were several orifices of the building that we were asked that we keep including some of the lettering and some other components."

Design plans are expected to be completed by the end of the summer with construction starting by the end of the year.

The building will house 192 rental residential units along with 3,000 feet of retail space. It will be located at 2nd and Arch streets. Building completion is projected to be in the spring of 2018.
