Girard College Ceremony Looks At The True Meaning Of Memorial Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An annual tradition at Girard College on the Friday ahead of Memorial Day Weekend helps remind the students what the holiday is all about.

Students and staff silently march in a long line from the chapel to Founder's Hall for a wreath laying to honor the 'Girardians' who died in wars while serving the United States of America.

Girard College president Clarence Armbrister hopes the students appreciate the loss of life that allows them to live freely.

"We take time and a moment every year to impress upon our children the importance of the sacrifice, and so it's one of my favorite days of the year here at Girard College," said Armbrister.

He says the meaning of the holiday is often lost among the shore trips and BBQs, and this solemn ceremony is a reminder that Memorial Day is observed, not celebrated.
