AAA Expects A Record Amount Of Americans To Travel For Memorial Day

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) -- With Memorial Day being the unofficial start to summer, millions of Americans are expected to travel for the holiday weekend.

Gas prices are the highest they've been all year, according to AAA. However, they're still low compared to previous Memorial Day weekends.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas is the lowest its been on this weekend since 2005, AAA said.

Drivers on the Berlin Turnpike reported paying $2.27 per gallon.

That's below the state average of $2.45, which is still 41 cents lower than a year ago.

Drivers told Eyewitness News that the savings help.

"[It's] awesome, because we do travel a lot for work and with the kids, so it's really helping out," said Susan Haswell of Cromwell.

"With a lot of travel it's always nice to have lower prices [and] save some money," said Scott Shea of Essex.

To go along with the lower prices, AAA expected this weekend to be the second busiest Memorial Day driving weekend on record. It projected more than 38 million Americans will be traveling, 90 percent of them by vehicle.
