AP Investigation Finds Phila. Airport Had 30 Security Breaches Since 2004

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Two intruders got past fences or gates outside Philadelphia International Airport last year, and at least one more so far this year.

The Associated Press tallied 345 airport perimeter security breaches at 31 major U.S. airports dating to 2004 and found they remain as frequent as ever, happening on average every 10 days.

Philadelphia shared information about its 30 breaches only after attorneys for AP got involved. Citing security, the airport only released total numbers for 2015 and part of 2016, without any incident descriptions.

The 30 incidents tie Philadelphia for second most nationally.

Through federal records, AP found details that Philadelphia tried to suppress, including a 2012 incident involving an officer's firearm.

Airports say their outer defenses are strong and note that no breach involved a known terrorist plot.
