NJ Official Tackles Child Birth When Mom Goes Into Sudden Labor

By Cleve Bryan

SOMERS POINT, NJ (CBS) -- Child birth is always in some way an adventure, but Sophia Marie Eads's grand entrance to the world is one people will never forget.

"I get a call at 4:04 in the morning saying that an officer actually delivered my baby at the house!" says father Jonathan Eads.

He says Tuesday morning around 3:45 his girlfriend Alyssa Martin woke up because he water broke.

Her grandmother called 9-1-1 and when Somers Point Police showed up before the ambulance squad, the officers had to deliver.

"I got there and she said she was in labor and I said EMS is on its way and sure enough I heard a baby cry," says officer Vincent Rivera.

He had no prior encounters with baby delivery but drew on 10 years military experience to stay calm.

"I used common sense, tried to support the baby's head, but mostly the mother did most of the work," says Rivera.

Eads says baby Sophia and mother Alyssa are doing fine and hope to be home by the end of the week.

"I just want to say thank you to him for bringing my daughter into this world healthy as can be," says Eads.
