Recent Weather Creates Produce Problems For Farmers

By Greg Argos

MULLICA HILL, Nj. (CBS) -- There's nothing like fresh Jersey produce. Before it gets to your table, it has to get out of the field.

This rainy, cloudy, cooler weather that we've had hasn't been helping.

Fred Grasso is a third generation farmer. He showed us the fields in Mullica Hill that he's worked for five decades. "You're guaranteed the unexpected. That's what you're guaranteed," Grasso told us.

That's been true so far this season, with wet weather essentially stunting much of his crop.

"Vegetables need three things," Grasso explained. "They need sunshine, water and heat. They got the water."

Without much sun and with cooler temperatures, crops are taking their time to grow.

The same issue is true on Delaware farms, where growth is anemic. Farmers there and in New Jersey say it's part of the business.

Despite the setback, take comfort in this...

"Don't worry. We'll have vegetables. It ma be a week or two later, but you'll have all the vegetables you want," Grasso said.

Despite the delay, Grasso, of Grasso Farms and other farmers, say there shouldn't be an increase in price.
