Camden Residents March Against Violence

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- After a particularly violent month of April in Camden, New Jersey, residents marched Saturday to take the streets back.

Five people were murdered in a two week period; even more beaten and robbed. Members from 40 different community groups, as well as residents, are unifying to say enough is enough.

"Each of all these different groups are fingers. When we come together as a fist there's a lot more we can do," said Amir Khan, who helped organize the march. "There's a lot that can be done when the City of Camden and all of these great, great organizations come together to work together holding hands."

John Royal used to run these streets and admits he was part of the problem, but now wants to be part of the solution and help the young men who are causing trouble.

"The root of most of their problems is low self esteem. So, they don't have any self worth. Somebody has to show them that you are worth it, you know your life is worth something and you can change. Regardless of what your situation is or what your facing, you can make a difference," Royal said. "You have to collectively alienate everybody that threatens your way of life, your lifestyle. It has to be a group effort to say you know what, it's not about that and we don't want any parts of that."
