Flyers Hoping To Force Game 7
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For the second time in seven years, the Flyers are hoping to rise from the dead in the post-season.
In 2010, the Flyers rallied from a 3-0 series deficit to beat Boston in the second round of the playoffs. Those Flyers were one of just four NHL teams which came back from a 3-0 series deficit. Are the 2016 Flyers ready for a similar story?
The odds are still against Dave Hakstol's squad, but a 2-0 win in Game 5 over Washington Friday night has kept their playoff series with Washington alive. Game 6 will be played at noon Sunday in South Philadelphia, and Claude Giroux is glad to get another chance to play in front of the Flyers' faithful.
"The toughest one was Game 5," said Giroux. "They had a chance to finish us off, and now we go to Game 6 in front of our fans. We know they're going to be ready and we're going to have them on our side. We're pretty excited for Game 6."
There is certainly reason for optimism with Giroux and his teammates. The Capitals were a heavy favorite going into this series after finishing with the most points during the regular season. Yet, all the pressure is on a Washington franchise which has yet to advance past the second round in this century. The Flyers also have Michael Neuvirth in net. Neuvirth was spectacular in Game 5, as he made 44 saves in the victory.
"I like to face a lot of shots," Neuvirth said. "It keeps me in the game. I enjoy it. The guys did a really good job in front of me, and I was seeing the puck well."
Neuvirth will have to see the puck well again on Sunday if the Flyers are going to keep their season alive. The Flyers still have yet to score more than two goals in one game this series, and are being outscored by the Caps, 13-6. However, Giroux believes the may have seen the best Washington has to offer on Firday night.
"I think that was the best game of the series," said Giroux. "They came at us pretty hard. If it's not for Newby, we're not winning this game, so we've got to be better."
If the Flyers are better in Game 6, they'll have a chance to make history in Game 7.
