Longtime Jersey Shore Promoter Calling It A Career

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) - The man who brought the Doo Dah Parade and dozens of other events to Ocean City is sending out his final press release at the end of this year.

After a 45-year career as Ocean City's public relations director, Mark Soifer is retiring.

Soifer is best known for creating unusual events like Martin Z. Mollusk seeing his shadow, or the Mister Mature America pageant as inexpensive ways to bring attention to the shore resort.

"I came up with plenty of things," he tells KYW Newsradio. "But it wasn't always a one-way street, is what I'm saying. You have to listen."

Soifer started in 1971, when few shore towns had tourism promoters. At 84, he says he's ready to let a younger staff to take over:

"I've done a lot of writing. And I want to get some of this stuff together while I still have all my marbles."

Soifer says he'll now spend more time with his wife of 59 years, his four children and eight grandchildren.
