Mayor Kenney Eager To Welcome NCAA Tournament To Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mayor Jim Kenney stopped by the Wells Fargo Center Wednesday as the city prepares to host this weekend's East Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

Holding a sign symbolically renaming Broad Street the Road to the Championship, Mayor Kenney reminisced about past NCAA Tournament games that were played in Philly, including one he will never forget.

"I was at the Spectrum when Christian Laettner hit that shot at the end against Kentucky," the mayor said. "I was sitting right where the foul line was shooting at our end."

Kenney the fan is rooting for Villanova, but Kenney the mayor is focusing on making sure things go well for thousands of rooters coming in to see Notre Dame, Wisconson, Indiana and North Carolina.

"It's just terrific that Philadelphia has the capacity to host these kinds of events," Kenney said, "and we're thrilled that the NCAA and their folks are coming in, the teams are coming in, the families, staying in our hotels and spending money in our restaurants and it's just what a big city is all about."

The regional semifinal is Friday night and the final is set for Sunday.
