Tempers Flare In Kathleen Kane Pre-trial
By Jim Melwert
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Tempers flared at a pre-trial hearing on criminal charges against attorney general Kathleen Kane. Kane's attorneys say the Montgomery County DA's office leaked information about the case to the Allentown Morning Call.
The case against Kane revolves around allegations that she leaked grand jury information to the Philadelphia Daily News and that, in turn, was retaliation for leaks about her to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Kane's attorney Gerald Shargel requested a hearing to see if the latest leak, to the Allentown paper, came from the Montgomery County DA's office, saying only they had a motive.
DA Kevin Steele told the court that Kane herself had motives to set up his office, or as Steele phrased it, to take the sting out of devastating evidence.
When Shargel accused Steele of throwing baseless accusations, Steele replied, "this whole case is about leaks out of the attorney general's office."
Speaking outside of court, Shargel called the claims "ridiculous."
The next hearing is scheduled for April 20th.
