Construction Worker Falls To His Death From L.A. Skyscraper, Lands On Moving Car

By Faith Karimi

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- A construction worker plummeted 53 stories to his death in downtown Los Angeles, landing on a moving car on the street, authorities said.

The worker was on his second day on the job Thursday at the unfinished Wilshire Grand Center, where the incident occurred, CNN affiliate KTLA reported.

After plummeting from the skyscraper, he struck the back of a car and was pronounced dead at the scene, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

A woman driving the car was hospitalized.

Turner Construction, the company at the site, said the man was not doing anything work-related at the time of the incident.

It declined to elaborate, saying it is awaiting a coroner's report.

"Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased," the company said in a statement to the affiliate. "We are also sending our deepest sympathies to our loyal and dedicated workers for whom today's tragedy is deeply saddening."

The 73-story Wilshire Grand Center is scheduled to open next year.
